Sustainable House Day  11th September 2011

If you really want the low-down on what it is like to live in an all-glowing, low-emitting, big-living, energy efficient home then get thee out there this Sunday 11th September from 10am – 4pm and find a Sustainable House near you ... they are all over Australia ... and have a good poke around.

Sustainable House Day gives you a chance to explore the homes and lifestyles of people living in a house that is more mouse than monstor when it comes to its environmental footprint.  You can talk to the folks living there, find out what they love, what they learnt and if it really is as good as it is quacked up to be.

I am keen to have a look at some of the newer project build 'sustainable houses' to see if they are built as well as they were designed. Things can look excellent on paper but to get all that actually built in takes a close eye and a fine-tooth comb.

Some of the homes on display might be architecturally designed houses with every energy efficient principle adhered to –solar passive this and that, double glazing, ventilation without drafts, insulation, rainwater harvesting and solar boosted everything.

Others are your stock standard Aussie home that has been retrofitted to be an energy efficient machine with heaps of interesting ideas about how to bring your bills down while keeping style and comfort up.
